It's Turkey Week!!
Did you know Americans consume more than 353 million pounds of turkey during National Turkey Lovers' month in JUNE? By comparison, more that 675 million pounds of turkey will be consumed at Thanksgiving. I didn't even know there was a National Turkey lovers day I just assumed that was Thanksgiving. Silly me!
Here is some more Turkey Trivia
- The average person in the United States will eat 15 pounds of turkey this year.
- A male turkey is called a tom, a female is a hen, and a youngster is a poult.
- Only male turkeys, or toms, can gobble, and they mostly do it in the spring and fall. It is a mating call and attracts the hens.
- At maturity, the average turkey shows off 3500 feathers.
History of Thanksgiving Holiday in the U.S
In a 1789 proclamation, President George Washington called on the people of the United States to acknowledge God for affording them "an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness "by observing a day of thanksgiving. Devoting a day to "public thanksgiving and prayer, " as Washington called it, became a yearly tradition in many communities.
Thanksgiving became a National Holiday in 1863
In that year, during the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln made his Thanksgiving Day Proclamation. He asked his fellow citizens to "set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next as a day of thanksgiving and praise..."
It was not until 1941 that Congress designated the fourth Thursday in the November as Thanksgiving Day, thus creating a federal holiday.
No Song for Thanksgiving.
The song "Jingle Bells" was actually written for Thanksgiving. The song was composed in 1857, by James Pierpont, and was originally called "One Horse Open Sleigh"
